FAQ

1. IS CFI LONDON A BRANCH OF CFI TRANSNATIONAL?

No. While CFI Transnational generously supports the work of CFI London, CFI London is a separate legal entity with its own distinct character and its own unique set of objectives.

2. ISN’T CFI LONDON UTOPIAN?

Doesn’t it suppose that all our problems can be solved by the application of science and reason? And isn’t that naïve?

CFI London does not suppose that all our problems can be solved by science and reason, or that the application of science and reason will inevitably usher in some sort of Golden Age of peace and prosperity. But we do believe science and reason provide us with indispensable tools in our search for the truth and our attempts to deal with the problems that face us.

3. ISN’T CFI LONDON ANOTHER FAITH ORGANIZATION?

Doesn’t it just blindly place its faith in science and reason?

CFI London does not make science and reason a “faith position” in the sense that it insists that scientific and/or rational thought and criticism should be applied to everything except science and reason.

It may be that reason can reveal that, ultimately, science and reason themselves rest on certain assumptions. However, they are assumptions we all make – indeed, we constantly trust our lives to science and reason. They have an extraordinary track record of revealing the truth. The application of science and reason has utterly transformed our lives over the last four hundred years or so. If we want to know what is true, there is no good reason not to apply them to such topics as religious belief, the paranormal, and so on.

4. DOESN’T CFI LONDON ARROGANTLY ASSUME THAT SCIENCE AND REASON CAN ANSWER EVERY QUESTION AND SOLVE EVERY MYSTERY?

Shouldn’t we acknowledge that some things are necessarily beyond our understanding?

CFI London acknowledges that some things may as a matter of fact, or even in principle, be beyond our understanding. We simply maintain that, to the extent that science and reason can be applied to these questions, they should be. The limitations of science and reason may be revealed by pushing them as far as they will go.
